Ray Fawcett – Player Profile
Don’t wave to Ray Fawcett if you see him driving by in his taxi. He’ll think you’re a prospective fare!
Born in Lower Hutt, Ray attended Naenae College mainly to play sport and in particular, cricket. He was
selected for the College First Eleven at a young age and, on leaving school, he went straight into the Taita
Club senior side where he remained for 20 seasons, seven of those as captain. He had the impressive
record of playing close to 200 senior matches as a high scoring batsman and an opening bowler. It’s fair
to say that cricket has continued to have an influence on Ray throughout his life and he’s travelled
overseas to watch the Black Caps several times.
Ray has two brothers and a sister. One of those brothers joined Ray’s team in this years VC Cup.
Ray hasn’t always been in the taxi business. His first employment was as an apprentice glazier with Smith
and Smith. From there he spent ten years as a courier and a few years in airport security.
About 20 years ago Ray and his partner Vicki came to their senses and moved to Raumati. Ray
succumbed to the temptation of Bowls 8 years ago and met with quite a bit of success in Glen Road and
was a member of the winning Fours team at Raumati last season.
Ray is not just a club member but also a valued sponsor. He is often seen leaning over the fence watching
play and waiting for his next passenger.
