Great Season Opening 2024/5
Hi members and supporters of the Raumati Bowling Club,
The beginning of the new season could hardly have been more successful.
On Opening Day we also opened our recently installed Barlow Green. New Life Member Sue McFarlane delivered the first jack and another Life Member who has been heavily involved in the decision around the new green (and other previous greens), Arnold Osborne, accurately sent down the first bowl. Arnold then announced, ” The new Barlow Green is officially opened”.
During a break in play, in what was a very popular format, a SGM was held to confirm the Financials for the previous year and to settle on Subscriptions. You will already have received your individual invoices. If you wish to change your membership category please respond asap. Competition and prize-giving was followed by and excellent afternoon tea. Thanks to Marie Yaxley and team.
Normally the Hyder Cup for a competition between men and women is on the schedule for opening day, but that’s been deferred. An announcement regarding an exciting new format for the Hyder Cup will be made soon.
On Sunday, the family of our late Treasurer Gavin Muir was in attendance for the Gavin Muir Triples. There was terrific support for this event from a number of clubs. A one-end final was required before Graeme Corlett, Neal Pritchard and Reg Goston were declared overall winners.
Friday was special too. A number of us watched the live coverage of Audrey, Rochelle and Michelle win their match against Central Otago in the National Champion of Champions Triples finals in Auckland. They were frustrated at their first-round loss after winning 12 of the 18 ends but were fired up for a later match against Paritutu, only losing the lead after 14 ends. The Blues members are extremely proud of this team. Well done!
A new feature has been added to Friday nights. Social Member Kathleen Johnson was the lucky winner of the first chance to pick the JOKER. She didn’t and so $?? has been added to the jackpot for this Friday. The club thanks Harry Shawcross for his outstanding contribution to, and organisation of, the previous weekly raffles. Hopefully Harry and Ann can now sit back and relax on a Friday night.
Murray Yaxley took away $180 when his name came up in the Member Draw.
This weekend we have the 2-day Junior 2 x 4 x 2. The popularity of this event is extraordinary. A team from Marlborough has entered, along with teams from Hawkes Bay and many from other parts of the lower North Island. Mike Harvey and the organising team were overwhelmed by teams wanting to enter. Thanks to new sponsors Courtyard on Margaret, and Summerset Waikanae for their support.
Enjoy your bowls everyone!
John
