From The Greens – September
It’s never a slow start to a new season of bowls at Raumati and our members have already been under the pump organising and running two very successful events.
As has been mentioned previously, the Junior 2x4x2 was a stunning success. For this tournament we welcomed a new sponsor in Courtyard on Margaret who were delighted when twenty of us turned up there for dinner on the Friday night. It’s a local eatery which is well worth a visit.
There were lots of worried looks early last week, all caused by the threatening weather forecast. But the Summerset Keith Elliott VC Cup has continued the marvellous record of never being adversely affected by the weather. Not a minute was lost. Unfortunately, another record continues- no Raumati team has won the Cup in its 37-year history.
Rohan Cuff’s Plimmerton four has now joined the list of winners, which is displayed on a wall in the clubhouse. Dave Hawken, Chris Macdonald and the Club captain, who were joined by Tom Henderson, won the Plate in a tense, extra- end final against Ted Marshall, Bill Ward, Rob Nicholson and Trevor Nielsen. Keith Elliott’s son, Peter, was all smiles afterwards as he presented the Cup.
Where is Reg? Lots of visiting players were asking this question during the VC Cup. After all, this event is Reg’s baby. Don’t fret, even though he’s in South Africa watching the All Blacks and enjoying himself, Reg kept a very close eye on the event via our website and Facebook!. Photo shows him at Ellis Park alongside his good mate and former All Black Mark Shaw.
We desperately need some more coaches within the club and if you are at all interested in moving into this area of the sport, you are urged to enrol for the Coaches Course which is being held at our club on September 21 and 22. You could chat with Pat Taylor about what’s involved or email Graeme Rees of Bowls NZ who is running the weekend- graeme@bowlsnewzealand.co.nz
On the subject of Coaching, there was a heartening turnout for Pat’s first session last Wednesday. Twelve players took advantage of this. The next session will be on the 18th September and then 2nd, 16th and 30th of October. Each session starts at midday and ends in time for players to take part in the Club Day at 1.30. A reminder to all that your discs should be in by 1.15 if you wish to play on a Club Day.
We’re fast approaching our first Club Championship– the Mixed Fours. At last glance there were 14 teams entered. Before then, there are events at some other clubs which you might be keen to enter.
Bowls Waikanae Triples Extravaganza on Sunday 21st September
Central Levin Two Day Triples 21st and 22nd September
The details for these events and any others we receive from clubs are on the notice board.
Good luck to those Blues players competing over the next two weekends at the PBBC. David Hawken will be playing in the Men’s 2x4x2 this weekend with one of his brothers, Brett, while Chris Macdonald has teamed up with Michael Hunter and Murray Yaxley is with Mike Simeonoff.
The women’s is the following weekend.
Enjoy your bowls!
