A Wonderful Weekend

On Saturday, our club captured the Division 2 Interclub women’s title. The Four of Lesley Cooper, Marie Yaxley, Kip Marshall and Trudy Nicholson suffered just one loss and ended up top of the division. The Pair of Michelle and Heather Simpson had an identical record. Jane Bradbury played the singles and her fifty percent record ensured the team secured the title.

On the same day, our Division 1 team cemented their place as top qualifiers for the finals. Lisa White has been unbeaten in the singles, Audrey and Rochelle Stevenson are the Pair and Ronnie Crone, Sue McFarlane, Lyndsay Osborne and Ngawiki Kirikiri comprise the Four.

Michelle Macdonald capped off a very successful weekend for our women when she won the final of the Centre Novice (Year1-2) singles. She showed wonderful composure in her match against Matt Horne of Waitarere Beach. Facing match point at 18-20 down, Michelle scored a 3 to take the game 21-20. She’d done something similar in her semi-final against Stephanie Hansen of Otaki. Husband Chris needed a beer after the stress of watching.

Despite a miserable, wet start, the club’s Opening Day event went off without a hitch. Club patron Bill Moffatt delivered the first bowl of the season before the annual Hyder Cup competition began. The men beat the women this year and Mike Harvey received the trophy from Life member, Russ Wilkins.
